Objective 1.3 - The Importance Of A Healthy Respiratory System
(submit on 22/01/2014)
(submit on 22/01/2014)
Learning Outcome : List the substances which are harmful to respiratory system
1) The air that we breathe in may contain substances which are harmful to our respiratory system
2) Some examples of the substances are cigarette smoke, carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, haze and toxins.
2) Some examples of the substances are cigarette smoke, carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, haze and toxins.
Type of pollutant : cigarette smoke. Chemicals in the pollutant : nicotine, tar, carbon monoxide, carcinogens, irritants | Type of pollutant : factory smoke. Chemical in the pollutant : sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide | Type of pollutant : vehicle smoke. Chemical in the pollutant : carbon monoxide | Type of pollutant : Burning Forest. Chemical in the pollutant : Haze. It made up of tiny solid particles |
Learning Outcome : 2) Explain the Effect of Pollutant on The Respiratory System
1) List the harmful effect on the respiratory system according to the substances that can harmful the respiratory system using Thinking map : Multi-Flow Map.
2) If you state TAR as a harmful substance, it can CAUSE CANCER.
3) Use different color of arrow to differentiate from one point with other point.
2) If you state TAR as a harmful substance, it can CAUSE CANCER.
3) Use different color of arrow to differentiate from one point with other point.
Learning Outcome : 3- List the Diseases of the Respiratory System
1. Asthma :
Caused by inhaling dust, cigarette smoke and industrial fumes.
Symptoms : asthma are shortness of breath, wheezing or coughing
2. Bronchitis :
Caused by inflammation of the bronchi caused by tar and the irritants in cigarette smoke.
Symptoms : continuous coughing. constant breathlessness and sleeplessness.
3. Emphysema (alveoli of lungs are enlarge and damaged)
Caused by harmful air pollutants espically those in cigrarette smoke.
Symptoms : shortness of breath, feeling of pain while breathing and exhaustion even after doing light work
4. Lung Cancer
Caused by carcinogens (cancer-causing chemical)
Symptoms : regular coughing, feeling of pain while breathing.
You can list the disease of the respiratory system using circle map.

EXPERIMENT : The Effect of Smoking on the Lungs (carry out on 16/01/2014)
Student need to write the report individual according to the steps below before conduct the experiment [B4D1E1]. Please write in Test Pad.
TITLE : The effect of smoking on the human respiratory.
AIM : _______________________________________
MATERIAL : Cigarette, white cotton wool, bicarbonate indicator/ litmus solution
APPARATUS : U-shaped tube, filter pump, test tube, rubber stopper, retort stand and clamp, glass tube, rubber connector, thermometer
PROCEDURE :
Draw a diagram (refer to text book/reference book)
1) Set up the apparatus as shown above.
2) Light up the cigarette and turn on the filter pump to suck in the cigarette smoke through the white cotton wool and bicarbonate indicator.
3) Record your observation of the temperature readings of the thermometer, the change in the white cotton wool and the color change of the bicarbonate indicator.

OBSERVATION :
ANALYSIS :
1) Which part of the body does the cotton wool represent?
2) Explain the causes of change to the cotton wool at the end of the experiment
3) Explain the causes of change to the bicarbonate indicator at the end of the experiment
4) Explain the causes of change to the thermometer at the end of the experiment
CONCLUSION :
Cigarette smoke contains _________________ that increase the temperature of the lungs, _________________ that blackens the lungs, and ________________________ that corrode the lungs cells.
